Heads Up Parents-Block Chatroulette

roulette_lgA college aged student contacted me for an interview about internet use and teenagers and in particular, a site called Chatroulette. We made an appointment to speak a few hours later. I decided to go to the site, since I had heard of it but had never visited. Within seconds I was face to face with a 20-something male who told me he was from Dusseldorf and a chat conversation ensued. I told him the truth, that I was being interviewed on my thoughts about the site. He immediately replied, “Oh, doing research, right…” The vibe was immediately suggestive. I insisted I truly was doing research and asked him how much trouble a 16 year old girl could get into on this site. “Loads of trouble, but like all porn, who will know?” So I asked if he would be comfortable knowing that his 16 year old would visit the site and he quickly replied “Hell no!!”  I thanked him for his time and signed off. I was too nervous to click “Next” which would have spun the roulette wheel to my next chat partner.

The game, or site, which started up in November – created by a Russian teenager, has quickly become viral.  Chatroulette connects you instantly with complete strangers.  Other than a few guidelines listed on the homepage: Must be 16. No nudity (both of which are ignored) – there are virtually no restrictions or supervision. When I had the interview that night, the student enlightened me that had I clicked “Next” I would have most likely been exposed to any number of lewd sexual acts. I am not judging what consenting adults do, but I think all parents need to know about this site and that it is as easy to get to as the Google homepage.  Anonymity, accessibility and sex are the perfect recipe for danger for your tweens and teens.

I’ve been hearing more and more about this horrific site. It is scary what the teenagers have access to on the internet. I’ve been telling all adults I know to warn their kids against it and speaking openly with teenagers about the dangers of it. Perhaps if we keep the conversation going, we can help a couple of teenagers avoid an uncomfortable situation.
